Having won their respective heats, our Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 teams, took part in the grand final of the SATRO Problem Solving Challenge on 23 April. With around 25 teams in each Key Stage across five heats, reaching the final was a fantastic achievement in itself but we are delighted to share that both teams went on to win their categories!
Students had 90 minutes to design and build a crane capable of moving a block (representing a “cold box” cryogenic distillation column) from a loading zone to an unloading zone as many times as possible within one minute, using very limited materials. They demonstrated outstanding creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, comfortably outperforming the other finalists in both Key Stages.
The final was held at Air Products’ new UK headquarters in Chertsey, a company specialising in industrial gases and involved in supplying liquid hydrogen and liquid helium for the recent Artemis II launch. Students also enjoyed an introduction to the company’s work, along with an impressive liquid nitrogen demonstration prior to the competition. Well done to all involved, and do come and look at the trophies in the cabinet when you are next in school!
