Our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition got off to a fantastic start on Friday 8th May, as students set out from Farnham to Tilford Campsite in glorious sunshine. The training day focused on building confidence in map reading, teamwork, and carrying expedition packs over longer distances — an important first step in preparing for the challenge ahead.
That evening, students put their survival skills to the test by cooking their own meals on trangias before settling in for their first night under canvas.
Saturday marked the beginning of the qualifying expedition, with students showing impressive resilience and determination throughout the day. Despite a few wrong turns along the way, groups worked brilliantly together to relocate themselves and get back on track — exactly the kind of problem-solving the expedition is designed to encourage! A well-earned apple stop at the halfway point kept spirits high before everyone successfully returned to camp in good time.
Back at the campsite, there was even time for a little fun, with one of the instructors teaching students some circus tricks before everyone settled down for the night after a busy and rewarding day.
Sunday’s final stage brought a new challenge as light rain greeted the groups during pack-up and departure. Although a few teams briefly lost their bearings early on, all groups showed perseverance and excellent navigation skills to complete the expedition successfully at Milford Station.
Throughout the weekend, students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, earning praise from both staff and instructors. We are incredibly proud of all they achieved during the expedition.
