HWS celebrated British Science Week (6th - 15th March) with a week packed full of exciting activities under this year’s theme: Curiosity.
The week kicked off with assemblies led by Mr Bishop, opening with the intriguing question: “What would happen if the Earth stopped spinning?” Students also showcased their creativity in a poster competition exploring “What children and young people think will make a ‘good’ or ‘positive’ childhood in the future.”
Year 7 students embraced the theme by being encouraged to “Ask a question”, exploring how data collection and analysis help scientists answer important questions. Meanwhile, a group of Year 7 and 8 students enjoyed a screening of the classic space adventure Apollo 13. All Year 8 classes got hands-on with DNA extraction, learning how scientists uncovered its structure and how this knowledge benefits health, while appreciating the importance of collaboration, computation, and communication in scientific discoveries.
34 Year 12 A-level Physics students had the unique opportunity to attend a Particle Physics masterclass at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. There, they heard from leading particle physicists and toured the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, a world-class particle accelerator.
From hands-on experiments to cutting-edge research experiences, British Science Week at HWS inspired curiosity and ignited a passion for science across all year groups!
